Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who is this margin calculator for?

It's built for cross-border sellers who source products from one country and sell them in another — dropshippers, import/export resellers, and online sellers on Amazon, Shopee, Coupang, and similar marketplaces. It factors in sourcing cost, customs duty, logistics, and platform fees so you can see your real net profit and margin at a glance.

How is the duty-free (de minimis) threshold calculated?

Every country sets its own minimum value below which imported goods are exempt from duty (e.g. around $150-200 for Korea). The US is a notable exception — it suspended this de minimis exemption entirely in August 2025, so nearly all US-bound imports now face duty regardless of value. The calculator automatically applies the correct threshold for your selected destination market (effectively $0 for the US), and if the USD-converted value exceeds it, duty and import tax are calculated together.

What's the difference between customs duty and import VAT/GST?

Duty is a tax on the goods themselves, while import VAT/GST is calculated on top of the goods value plus duty. Rates vary a lot by country (around 21% in the EU, 10% in Korea/Japan/Vietnam, no federal VAT in the US), and the calculator applies the correct rate automatically based on your destination country.

How are exchange rates handled, and why keep updating them?

Exchange rates move daily and can meaningfully affect your real margin. Use the “Fetch Live Rates” button to pull current rates from a free public API, or edit any rate manually in the Exchange Rate Settings panel if you have a more accurate figure.

How are marketplace/platform fees handled?

Average commission rates for major marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, Shopify, Coupang, Naver SmartStore, Shopee, Tokopedia, etc.) are pre-filled as defaults when you pick a market. You can always override them if your actual contract terms differ.

When should I use the “simulate without duty/import tax” option?

Use it when you're unsure whether duty will actually be enforced, or you want to preview your best-case margin assuming no duty applies. Toggling it on forces duty and import tax to zero regardless of the de minimis threshold.

How does entering a purchase quantity affect the calculation?

Sourcing cost, sales revenue, and platform fees are all multiplied by the quantity you enter, reflecting the total for the whole batch. International shipping and forwarding/agency fees, however, are treated as a single flat cost for the shipment and are not multiplied by quantity, since that's usually billed per box regardless of how many units are inside.

Is any of my data stored anywhere?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server. Only a few convenience settings (like your last-selected home currency) are saved locally in your browser. See the Privacy Policy page for full details.

Does it support markets and currencies from many countries?

Yes. It supports sourcing from and selling into the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. For a country not on the list, select “Custom Input” to set your own duty-free threshold and import tax rate manually.

Can I fully trust the calculated results?

No — treat them as estimates. Actual duty and import tax depend on product classification (HS code), how customs enforces the rules, and exchange rate fluctuations at the time of shipment. Always confirm exact figures with a customs broker or the official guidance from your marketplace or customs authority.
